Is Depression Defining How You Live Your Life?

Do you feel like an overwhelming sense of despair, hopelessness, or sadness is limiting the way you live and interact with others? Are you so preoccupied with negative thoughts about yourself or the world that you constantly feel exhausted and emotionally depleted?

Perhaps you find yourself questioning the very meaning and purpose of life—endlessly searching for something that makes you feel less empty inside. Or maybe you have felt sad and depressed for so long that it seems like nothing will ever get better.

No matter how mild or severe, depression has the power to derail your life in many different ways. You may have trouble finding the energy or willpower to get out of bed and go to work. The desire to engage in hobbies or pastimes has likely been replaced with a numbness that prevents you from enjoying anything. You may have noticed a change in your sleeping patterns, eating habits, or self-care routine that is slowly impacting your physical health. And the persistent sense of guilt, worthlessness, and self-hate probably tempt you to self-medicate or self-harm to ease the pain.

When you are living with depression, just believing in a world in which you can be happy feels impossible. But with the help of a kind, and caring depression counselor, you can learn how to cope with and even overcome depression. In time, you can be happier, feel freer, and ultimately, discover your best life.

Depression Is A Common Aspect Of The World We Live In

The truth is that life is already hard, but if you are dealing with depression, trying to bounce back from adversity can be an especially difficult and isolating experience. Yet that doesn’t mean you are alone. Over 264 million people worldwide struggle with some form of depression, making it the leading cause of disability globally.

Depressive disorders can arise for any number of reasons. For instance, if you have experienced abuse, trauma, or the loss of a loved one, the grief and pain can easily provide fertile ground in which depression can take root. Challenges with perinatal issues may be fueling postpartum depression and feelings of inadequacy. Certain medications, medical diagnoses, or injuries can rob you of your sense of autonomy and independence. And if you have a history of depression in your family, it may simply be a matter of genetics.

Unfortunately for many people coping with depression, their lives are literally in crisis. And when people are in a state of crisis, it becomes almost impossible to think clearly, make rational decisions, and initiate positive change.

Working with a professional counselor can teach you how to deal with depression effectively without numbing out or turning to unhealthy distractions. Though it may not seem like it now, I can help you make subtle shifts in your thinking that will enable you to believe in yourself and find an enduring sense of peace and contentment in your life.

Depression Treatment Can Offer You A New Perspective On Life

Many people who struggle with depression have a hard time viewing themselves in a positive, competent light. However, working with a therapist allows you to explore those limiting beliefs and understand what it is that truly keeps you stuck, unable to find happiness and a sense of peace. Together, we can identify where negative thought patterns and emotions originate from and take practical steps to improve your perspective on life, the world, and yourself as a person.

At the beginning, I just want to be here for you in whatever way you need. So whether you need to talk about something that happened 20 years or two weeks ago, it’s completely up to you. Though there’s no magic wand I can wave to make everything better, just having someone who will listen compassionately, support you emotionally, and understand you fully is immensely therapeutic.

To get started, I’ll have you come in and describe your experiences with depression and what you hope to achieve through counseling. In subsequent sessions, we may explore your childhood experiences, personal background, and your family history with depression. And we’ll look at any adverse life events or transitions that may have contributed to depression, such as trauma, divorce, or losing a loved one to Covid or addiction.

I also want to place a large focus on re-contextualizing negative life experiences and self-beliefs that are holding you back. To do that, I incorporate a number of interventions into my healing strategy. Oftentimes, I’ll employ some cognitive work that examines how certain thoughts, emotions, and actions feed off of one another, perpetuating a cycle of negative self-talk.

Family Systems work enables me to take a broader look at the family dynamics you grew up with and how they shaped your individual development. And I use Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy to address any depression-related issues attributed to trauma. For the most part, however, I use psychodynamic talk therapy to gain a better understanding of the mental and emotional processes that may be fueling the negative self-beliefs at the core of your depression.

Since 2011, I’ve been helping clients realize their potential to live their best lives. And though right now, it may seem like the weight of the world is holding you down, there is a way to lift that burden. By working with a kind and compassionate depression counselor, you can have more energy to pursue a career, initiate new relationships, or simply be the best parent, partner, or person you can be. You can live a healthier, happier life free of sadness, and I want to show you the way.

Perhaps you are considering depression counseling but still have some concerns…

Do I even have depression?

If you have been struggling with a deep sense of hopelessness or sadness that hasn’t improved over time, it may be time to reach out for support. Even if you don’t have clinical depression symptoms and simply feel as though life is beating up on you all the time, I can help. Just the fact that you are looking at this page means that deep down somewhere you acknowledge that a part of you is either in need of healing or growth, so why not give depression counseling a try?

I’m worried about how much depression treatment is going to cost.

The cold, hard truth is that the temporary cost of investing in your long-term health pales in comparison to the negative impact that depression can have. Though I do work with some major insurers, it’s of paramount importance to prioritize your mental well-being just as you would your physical health. So rather than looking at therapy for depression as a hit to your bank account, try seeing it as a short-term investment that will pay off for years and years after our sessions have concluded.

What makes you unique as a therapist?

Most people, I think, see me as an old soul—a universal soul with whom they can easily connect. I’m the same person inside and outside of the office: laid back, warm, and unconcerned with social hangups. And I’m asked nearly everywhere I go, “Do I know you? Have we met before?” So I think there is a certain level of familiarity that is immediately disarming for some clients.

I also love working with people from marginalized or underrepresented populations. Whether you’re a person of color, a member of the LGBTQ community, or simply someone who struggles to find their place in this world, I love helping and healing others, and I believe it shows through in sessions.
